Woke up relatively early and grabbed a quick breakfast before dashing off to the bus stop to catch a bus to the train station. From there it was a quick 20 minute train to Desenzano del Garda.
It was pissing down with rain when we arrived but we sent off on the short walk down the hill to the lake. We didn't have anything planned some we just set off along the shoreline under our umbrellas. Next thing we know we are accosted by a guy claiming to be a refugee from Libya asking for money. We said no but I offered food, one of my sweet mandies but he said NO, thats not food. We kept walking.
As the rain wasn't letting up we went to plan b and found a nice looking cafe, Dolce Caffe. We both had a coffee and tried some of their homemade treats, ended up sitting there for a while to dry off and figure out our next move.
We found there was a castle nearby that was a popular attraction, so we walked back up the hill to visit the Castello di Densenzano. The castle itself was built in the dark ages, but is now used for functions and exhibitions, so it was actually quite modern inside, with little to no information of its history. There was however a lovely photography exhibit from a competition. We walked up to the top of the castle and there was a 360 degree view of Densenzano, pretty amazing, but probably would have been more amazing in summer - the fog and rain made it pretty hard to see anything substantial unfortunately.
After staying in the castle for as long as we could entertain, we went back outside to brave the rain and had a walk around the streets looking for a place to eat a pasta lunch. After walking around for about an hour, and finding everything was either pizza or too expensive, we returned to the Dolce Caffe. We'd seen earlier that they offered a set lunch, and it offered the pasta we'd been craving, so we settled in for a nice lunch of pumpkin ravioli, spiral pasta with peppers, a deliciously fresh caprese salad, and two more coffees, and of course, dessert to finish!
We decided there really wasn't much more to do in the town, so we walked back up the hill to the train station and took the train home. Funnily, when we went to buy the ticket, I (Jackie)spoke to the staff in Italian, he promptly replied to me in English... so obviously my Italian is not very good haha.
Once back in Verona, we walked to a gelateria that I'd seen had good ratings and BOY was it amazing. This place made its own gelato, and we tried their signature caramel with almond flavour, coffee, as well as a ginger sorbet - all super yummy.
Then we retired to the hotel for an afternoon nap, before heading out again at night for pizza, zucchini flowers, and some Italian dessert. Then it was off to bed, ready to wake up early tomorrow morning to have brekky and head to the airport for home.
