Europe Trip Day 72: City Hall

It was a great effort to get out of bed this morning as we spent much of the night hunting down mosquitoes. We must have jumped out of bed at least 3 separate times when we heard the suckers hovering near our bed. We were pretty defeated by the time we gave up and even after killing a bunch of them, we still woke up with plenty of itchy lumps from head to toe.

Brekky

So we dragged our tired butts to a cafe to have a hearty breakfast before checking out of our apartment. We then walked over to Subotica's grand City Hall and joined the midday tour.
The City Hall, built under Austro-Hungarian rule, follows the Art Noveau style and it was absolutely beautiful inside. Every tile was handmade, the ceilings and walls were painted by master craftsmen from Hungaria at the time. Ryan and I were most impressed by  the stain glass windows which were extremely detailed and very colourful.

The tour took us to see the ceremonial room, which will be used tomorrow to announce the new mayor of Subotica. And we also walked many flights of stairs up to the tower where we got a pretty nice view as far as Palic.

We also started chatting to the tourist office assistant and some visiting Serbians, and they solved the mystery for us as to why all the retail shops are displaying posters of high school kids headshots. Apparently it is a cultural thing where they like to celebrate the accomplishment of the next generation (having completed high school). Meanwhile Ryan and I have been stopping to look at them to see who we think is good looking hahaha oops.

Anyway, the tour finished and we immediately made our way to the bus station. Unfortunately we went to the train station thinking the buses were next to it, but turns out they were 1km down the road. So we trudged, through 35 degree heat with our packs to the right place, and I almost broke down in tears because I was so tired, sweaty and itchy. Luckily we got to the bus on time, albeit in a sweaty heap.

Once arrived in Belgrade around 7pm, we walked 10 minutes to our apartment. Unfortunately there was no aircon, so it will be a rather uncomfortable night. Then had dinner and Ryan watched the Euros (obviously).
