After getting ripped on the taxi ride when we arrived in Novi Sad we opted for the bus to the train station; the number 4 bus took us straight there and only cost 110 dinar compared to the 1000 we paid for the taxi...no more taxi rides.
After two hours of rolling north through agricultural plains we pulled in to Subotica.

The weather here was great - cloudy and mid 20's, a nice change from the hell heat. We had caught an earlier train than expected so grabbed some free Wi-Fi and messaged our Airbnb host that we were on our way. Luckily as we were looking for building numbers he strolled out to close his gate.
We went in search of some lunch after checking in, ending up at a ubiquitous pizza/cafe place.

After lunch we headed out to do a self guided art nouveau walking tour available here They have some amazing buildings, tree lined promenades and fountains in the town centre, so it was an enjoyable walk up to the point the heavens opened up and we had to seek shelter under the eaves.

After waiting for the rain to let up for 15 minutes we did a mad dash into the nearest shelter - tragically a McDonald's - where Jackie warmed up with a hot apple pie.
Once the rain cleared we walked onwards on our tour, ending up near home where we stopped.

At around 8pm we headed out to a restaurant that Jackie had found on the net. Food was good and it was in a cool art deco building.

It's really a very nice town so far. According to the gospel internet the art deco buildings are from the turn of the century with a Hungarian influence; not surprising with the whole Serbian - Austro Hungarian tie in. The Hungarian artists believed industrialisation killed beauty, so they made a concerted effort to have beauty trump shit buildings...if only communism had done the same around the rest of Europe.
