Europe Trip Day 41: Berat

We were woken by the morning light streaming in through the arch windows. Finally a sunny day! We had an interesting breakfast prepared by the Nana of the house, dough balls dipped in honey, pork sausages, bread, boiled eggs and cheese filled pastry.
We weren't sure where we would head for our next destination, but we are cognisant that we only have about 5 more weeks before we need to be in the UK. We decided on Berat which is a few hours north - at least we are heading north towards Montenegro. We walked down the mountain to the main road and asked around for a bus. Turns out there is a bus stop only a few hundred metres down the road. We walked down and again asked around for a bus to Berat, but it turned out we had just missed the only one for the day. Damn.
But before we knew it phone calls were being made and we were hustled into a taxi, and sped for 5minutes along the highway to the bus pulled over by the side of the road. Only cost a few dollars more and we were on our way.
We arrived just out side Berat after three hours. Next was into a local bus for the ride into town. We jumped off about 200 metres from our hotel and walked up the hill. We are located just down from the Berat Castle.
First impressions of Berat is that it's similar to Gjirokaster, maybe a bit more crowded being stuck in a smaller valley.
We grabbed lunch, with Ryan being hangry. lunch turned out okay though, very fresh, even so fresh that snail was crawling around the salad. But we haven't died yet so no damage done (hopefully). After lunch we walked the punishing climbing up to the castle. Not too much to see but still very nice views in the sun.

We went on a mission to get an ice cream but the prices at the top were quite exxy, so only grabbed one once we were back down in the valley. We ate our icrcream in the Lulishtja park next to the river. We then walked the bridge across to the other side and had dinner, which is where I'm tapping out part of this blog post out.

After dinner we went back to the hotel to admire the view from the terrace.
