A pretty shit nights sleep for both of us due to road noise and the call to prayer. Unfortunately our hotel room faces the highway and the mosque - double whammy. We knew it was going to be a hot day so we made sure we were up early for breakfast and out the door by 8.30. We walked the three kms to Ephesus through some backroads, surrounded by peach orchards, olive trees and occasionally ripe mulberry trees. At 9 we arrived at ephesus and bought entry tickets. It was already warming up with lots of tourists milling around so we entered without further adieu.
For us it was a bit hard to really grasp how amazing the sights were that we were seeing. I say that because most of the time you are seeing ruins; an amazing carving here, some pillars or a gate here, so it's hard to grasp just how amazing the temples and buildings would have been.
Some of the sights were breathtaking even though only parts remained. The mosaic stone floors, the Celsus library, the Arcadian street; these parts help you visualise how grand the city must have been.
We spent three hours wandering around and then called it as it was getting very hot. A dolmos (bus) back to town and then some recuperation back at the hotel. Jackie also wasn't feeling well so we took it easy. For lunch we wandered around town looking for a place to eat that might cater to Jackie's tastes (is not kebab) and ended up with what we usually do... eating fresh fish - not such a bad outcome. We spent the afternoon walking around and then playing some backgammon.
We have been on a quest for two things - laundry and sunscreen. Sunscreen we have given up on, it's just craxy experience since here, like 20 Aud for a small bottle.
Laundry you can only hold out on for so long - we tried to resist the 30 lira/15 aud charge hoping to find somewhere cheaper, but it didn't work. In the end we went to a laundry place here after they quoted the same price but for an 8kg load. We went to pick the laundry up today and lo and behold the price is now 25aud?? The guy was trying to say it didn't fit in one machine but we had asked the girl when we dropped it in if it would and she said yes... we stuck to our lira and bloke have in. 15 aud for one load of laundry...crazy
