UK: Wet Bath - Day 1

We only have 5 days for this trip but I thought it would be worth blogging just to keep track of where we've been.
We started the day at 10.30 by picking up our Peugeot 107 from Europcar at Heathrow only to find it was absolutely tiny; so small that the boot couldn't event fit my suitcase (admittedly its absolutely stuffed full of clothes). Its only 150 AUD for the week so I guess we can deal with the small size. Amazingly we have managed to start our holiday just as hurricane St Jude is arriving in the south of the UK, so the 2 hour drive from Heathrow to Bath was particularly shit. After parking in central Bath, we braved the rain to try and explore a bit, found some market food for lunch and then checked out the Roman Baths. The Baths themselves weren't that amazing, but the idea of a Roman influenced town existing there since the first century is quite cool.

We asked at the information centre where we could get a nice view of the town and the girl there recommended Alexandra Park. We grabbed a coffee and headed up there and it was the right decision, it was amazing. The views and Bath in general are beautiful, like something out of a Dickens book. We were up there at around 4pm and the views were like a painting, almost surreal in its detail (we don't have a card reader for Jackies camera so sorry no pictures).

Jackie then did some googling on her phone and found a B&B for 60GBP for the night so we booked that and headed out. With the light fading and the rain coming down were wound our way through the hedgerows to Antonias House B&B in the town of Melksham. After checking in to our lovely room we tried for dinner at the local pub but the kitchen was closed. We then drove 2 mins into town and found the Hungry Horse. For 15GBP Jackie had a British Beef and Ale pie while I had a Hawaii 5O steak with a coke. Not amazing food but filling. The pub didn't really have much of a soul though, I think its one of the many commercialised pubs that come with a generic look/feel/food. Jackie also remarked "you know what its was like when you went to China and everyone stared at you"... I dont think they get many honkers around these parts. In fact, I don't know if they get much genetic diversity either, the people in the pub all looked pretty similar.

We are now in our room watching the TV, listening to the rain come down. Hopefully tomorrow brings clearer skies.
