Started our last full day in Washington by going out to breakfast. We were going to a place our AirBnB hosts recommended but it was closed, so ended up going to another cafe. There must have been some gay pride week going on because every shop on the street had rainbow streamers and flag decorations. Afterwards we headed to the Natural History Museum. Saw lots of taxidermied animals haha including a huuugee bear and bison. It also featured a really interesting exhibit on evolution which had model busts of what the earliest Neanderthals and humans looked like. By the time we finished looking at the dinosaur exhibit our feet were hurting and the large amount of screaming kids running around prompted us to call it a day there. We then took a quick look at the Smithsonian castle and headed to the Old Post Office, where we took an elevator up the tower. Saw a great view of the city and realised just how beautiful Washington DC really is. Its streets are spacious and on the top of some buildings are lovely gardens and patios. After a little rest at home we found an Eritrean restaurant for dinner, located a few blocks from Dupont Circle. We observed that the area was quite affluent, with many boutique stores, salons and gourmet restaurants and cafes. The Eritrean restaurant however, was far from pretentious. The server was so nice and helped us with ordering, plus the food was tasty and filling.
Today we woke up early to pack and caught our bus to New York. The woman sitting behind us on the bus made really gross phlegm noises and would start singing to herself. Once arriving in NY we caught the subway to the Lower East Village and found our apartment. The area seemed a little dodgy at first, but then we realised that its just a hipster area. Even our apartment is hipster. And we're pretty sure a hoarder lives across the hall.
After settling in, we took the metro uptown and went up the Empire State. The view was amazing, it was just high rises everywhere, and then a huge rectangle of green where Central Park is. Our pass included the NY Skyride which is a simulated experience which takes you over the sights of NY. It was terrible! Luckily we didn't have to pay $42 a ticket for it! Stomachs were grumbling by that point so we went back to our side and had a slice of New York pizza which was deeeeeellliiicious! And the pizzeria wasn't even a famous one! Then went to get groceries and headed home for the NBA finals.
