USA Trip: Windy City - Day 6 & 7

So we've spent the last two days getting burn by the sun and blasted by the wind. We knew that San Fran was/is a windy city but after the last two days I don't know if I could ever live here, its just too windy. Out of the wind and in the sun it gets warm, but as soon as you're exposed to that wind whipping in off the pacific is absolutely freezing. We walked through Golden Gate park (which our map is grossly misrepresented; its absolutely massive and a hike in its self) to the sea with the intentions of walking onto the beach and dipping our toes, but the wind coming off the water was something else so we didn't even make it onto the beach. We're just glad that we have a bus/tram pass that gives unlimited travel so we don't have to be out in the wind all the time. But I'm ahead of myself.
Yesterday morning we bought our bus pass on hopped on the tram to Fisherman's Wharf to check out the seals. Very touristy spot but nice enough in the sun. Soon it was lunch time and the Champions League Final was kicking off so we found a bar and settled down. It was nice to watch a great match at lunch time rather than 4 am.
Caught the tram back to our hotel for a nap as Jackie was still feeling sick and then headed out for dinner with Tom and his girlfriend Mel. Had some great Viet. Tom recommended checking out the area around the restaurant afterwards as it was an interesting mix of dodgy and gentrified groups. Jackie and i managed about 5 minutes walking around, and then nearly froze to death getting home. The other not so nice part of San Fran is the number of homeless and crazy street people. A newspaper we read said there were 600 homeless beds but nearly 1200 homeless; I could believe it. Catching the bus from the Viet place which was near one of the dodgier areas meant a lot of pee smelling fellow passengers.
This morning we caught a ferry to Alcatraz. The audio guided tour of the actual prison was great as it was narrated by former guards and prisoners and really adds to the atmosphere. Aside from the prison itself however there isn't that much else to see on the island. Caught the ferry back and then grabbed a lunch of fish burgers, which although were highly recommended on Yelp, were actually pretty horrible. Way too greasy which might suit the American taste but for us were disgusting.
Headed back to the shopping district and spent two hours buying clothes which are cheap compared to Australia. Met up with tom and Mel again for a dinner of Japanese followed by delicious ice cream. Home now in bed typing this out, tomorrow we are cycling over the bridge so hoping for good and warm weather.
