After camping the night at the side of the highway we drove to Burnie for some more fuel (including the Jerry can; we barely managed to make it to Burnie without running out, all the hill climbs have destroyed our fuel consumption). From Burnie we took the Bass Hwy along the coast to Somerset, Wynyard, boat harbour beach and sisters beach. Both of these were really nice white sandy beaches but the weather today was rubbish, cold and overcast so we wet our toes and kept going. Next was rocky cape national park, Stanley and then Smithton. We wanted to reach Cape Grim which is apparently the windiest place in Australia but blocking our progress on one side was a Van Diemens farming property (they apparently owned 150km of farming land along the coast from Cape Grim eastwards) and on the other side a wind farm that's been turned into a money making venture requiring you to pay for a tour. After cape Grim the next three hours was spent in frustration trying to reach Marrawah. First we couldn't find the dirt road that was meant to lead there. We eventually turned down a dirt road that we thought was a street, and it was marked with a steet name, and another car followed us down this street, but after leading us into a forestry plantation for the next hour it proceded to die on us. To be honest if probably gave us fair warning; first it was the trees down over the road, then it was the vines growing across the road, and finally the gum trees sprouting out of the middle of the road. We had passed countless branches off the road in our journey to the centre of nowhere, but thankfully on our trip in Stefano had dictated our direction using a foolproof piece of logic. Any road that was signposted with a different name than that of our destination must be the wrong road, and conversely any road that wasn't signposted should lead to our destination. This piece of logic meant we were never really 'lost' in this gigantic plantation, but merely disorientated from our correct nameless destination. We spent the next hour trying various other offshoots of the main road, and after 3 hours we gave up and headed back to the main road. We ended up taking the highway to Marrawah.
We camped the night next to the beach at Marrawah. When we arrived the wind was howling and everyone there was dressed in their thermal gear. After 2 days without showers the opportunity to clean off could not be better placed. A quick dip in the sea under a settig sun, followed by a rinse off under the cold shower and then into the sleeping bag. I think the other people camping thought we were just a tad nuts. A long day it was.
